Your Ketubah.....
Originally, Jewish people used to make a religious marriage covenant they signed under the Chuppah, in front of 2 religious witnesses. It was the proof of the groom’s engagement to respect, to feed and to protect his wife as long as they will be married. The ring was a part of the “ kynian”, the way they confirmed the covenant. The groom had to add a big amount as his wife’s guarantee in case they will divorce one day.
The contract was written in Aramaic like all the contracts at the Temple period. Aramaic is the language of the Talmud and the Guemara, it is written in Hebrew letters. All over the world, Orthodox, Traditional and Official Rabbinical ketubot are written in Aramaic. Only people whom the mother is Jewish-or after conversion- can sign this covenant. The Rabbi approves the text according to the Jewish law but any other religious person can officiate and sign the Ketubah.
You will need to give a few informations to fill the blanks: Hebrew names of the bride, the groom and their parents, date, hour, city and state of the Chuppah. If you lose your ketubah, you must ask for a new one. I always keep the file so we could reprint your ketubah….
Some of the ketubot are not exactly like the Jewish law indicates, they may be the translation of the Aramaic text but most of the time, they are reform wordings that have been written according to faith, love and romantic principles. They keep the main informations : names, date, city and state of the wedding. Rabbis may be a woman, a Candelor or even just an Officiant and sometime, only one of the couple is Jewish. They may be written in Hebrew but also in other languages.
In all the cases, The ketubah is more than just a symbol. You may buy it ready to fill for rush orders or ask for a custom.
